Tribute to Totto-Chan
The Shangri-La Diet mentions Totto-Chan: The LIttle Girl at the Window by Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, a memoir of elementary school, which is one of my favorite books. At the author’s school, Sports Day trophies were vegetables — a daikon radish, for example. A more typical Sports Day trophy:

Recently, I managed to get an English translation from the library and read it. In case you haven’t read the book, hunt it down–it is well worth the effort.
